Walking with Purpose: Regis Jesuit High School’s Immersion Trip to Memphis
In early October, a student team from Regis Jesuit High School stepped into Memphis not just to serve, but to listen, learn, and see the city through the lens of justice.
This immersive trip, guided by Serve901, was built around the intersections of civil rights history, urban inequity, and community resilience. From their first stop at Cafe Eclectic for an orientation with local leaders, to hands-on work at organizations like Room in the Inn, Landmark Urban Farms, and Knowledge Quest, the students experienced Memphis with open hearts and minds.
Midweek, the group spent several hours at the National Civil Rights Museum, followed by a soul food lunch at The Four Way, where Dr. King and other leaders of the movement once dined. These moments offered not just education, but emotional depth and space for reflection.
Throughout the week, the team also:
- Explored Memphis on a justice-themed city scavenger hunt
- Took a “Toxic Waste Tour” with Protect Our Aquifer, learning how environmental injustice impacts North Memphis
- Served at Junior Achievement’s JA in a Day, mentoring elementary students in financial literacy
- Rode bikes with Urban Bicycle Food Ministry, offering meals and compassion to unhoused neighbors
Their days were full — but never rushed. Each experience was rooted in understanding Memphis' past and present struggles, and the hope rising from community-led solutions.
We’re grateful to Regis Jesuit for choosing to spend their break with us — not as tourists, but as thoughtful participants in Memphis’ ongoing story.
